Game 53: Cubs 5 – Cardinals 4 (14)

Cubs rise to 21-32

POTG: Ryan Dempster (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 K, 3 IHR, 0 scored, 0 R, W#57)

Runner Ups: SP Sean Marshall (6.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, BB, 4K, QS), RP David Aardsma (1.2 IP, 2 H 1 K; if this wasn’t game 1 of a 10 game road trip, I’d tell him to unpack his bags, because he should be sticking around for a while), RP Scott Eyre (2 IP, 3 H, BB, 3 K), CF Juan Pierre (3 H, 2B, RBI, R), RF JACQUE (3 H, HR, R, RBI); C Michael Barrett (3 H, 2 BB, 2B, yet somehow 0 runs) Cedeno got 3 Hs, but he was bad in other ways to even it out.

I STILL can not believe Rolen let that one thru. I shrieked when it went thru his legs; not because I’ve suddenly flipped sides, but because when Scott Rolen lets an easy game winning double play thru his legs, it destroys your world view. If that happens to A-Ram, I just shrug it off, because he’s A-Ram. Rolen blows a play, and my mind is blown.

Marshall continues to look good. At least we got one rookie starter to work out.

16 hits, and only 3 for extra bases. Which is actually better than what the Cardinals did. This is how you get 14 inning games.

Ohman, Novoa, Williamson and Howry should be good to go today. Eyre and Dempster might be ready for tomorrow, but it’d be nice if we didn’t need them. I don’t think we’ll actually need Ryan, but that’s only for bad reasons. Hope Rusch can prove me wrong and we find out who Dusty trusts for a save when his top two guys are unavailable. (I bet Williamson, though he looked not good last night.)

I suspect there will be a move or two before the game, because the Cardinals could use the help, and they really can’t be carrying two guys on the bench who they can’t play. That probably cost them the game last night. They called up Timo Perez for a pitcher before the game, which cost them from being able to use a pinch hitter in a game winning situation.

Are they ever going to figure out that Mabry won’t swing unless you force him? He walked more than he hit last month, and he’s starting down that path again.
